Shhh, The Little One’s Sleeping

Monumento Natural Los Pingüinos, Isla Magdalena, Chile

I just love this photo mainly because it’s cute but also because it’s a family of penguins relaxing at home in their natural habitat.

I came across a few different types of penguins on my journey around the world but Isla Magdalena, a national nature reserve off the coast of Chile, was the only place I got up close and personal to so many penguins.  I had a fabulous time and got so much joy from watching them go about their daily business.

If you don’t mind boat trips, this is definitely worth visiting when you are in or near Punta Arenas.  You can see the exact location on the map below.  It’s only open from December to February so, if you want to visit this island, make sure you factor that in when you are planning your route!  There is an alternative location that is easier to get to and open for longer – Pingüinera de Seno Otway.  There is a review on Fodor’s if you would like further information on that.
