Before I left for my travels, I never thought I would miss any food. The strange thing is I did and it’s not so much the fact that I missed a particular type of food, it was the type of food I actually missed that was strange.
I had been travelling for about 3 months. I was in Nha Trang, a coastal city in Southern Vietnam, when I awoke one morning with this overwhelming desire for… wait for it… beans, baked beans, in fact. It’s strange because I don’t eat baked beans much when I’m in the UK and this desire came out of nowhere. I hadn’t been talking about baked beans and I hadn’t seen any baked beans since I left the UK. The desire was so strong that I made it my mission that day to find some somewhere. Believe me, it wasn’t an easy task and, at one point, I wasn’t sure I would find any. It seemed like an impossible task. But, I am a very determined person so I continued my search and, sure enough, I did eventually find some baked beans. I was so happy and savoured every mouthful. I don’t know if it was something biological or emotional that triggered this craving but I never had that urge again for baked beans or any other type of food for the remainder of my trip (9 months).
I have met other people who are away from home for a period of time and they often tend to miss a certain type of food that is typical to their country or region, although I’m not sure their desire to find it is ever as strong as mine was that particular day.
So, now you know what baked beans and Nha Trang have in common – nothing apart from my overwhelming desire for baked beans while I was in Nha Trang.
Do you miss or crave any particular food when you travel. If so, what is it?
