Island Life On Isola Maggiore

As I mentioned in a previous post, I fell in love with the idea of being by Lake Trasimeno and daydreamed about living there ‘Under The Umbrian Sun’.

While I was there I had the opportunity to visit Isola Maggiore, which is the second largest island out of three on Lake Traismeno.  It’s a lovely little island with a very small population and is where St Francis of Assisi spent some time during lent in 1211.  If, like St Francis, you want some quiet time or you fancy just wiling away a few hours or days on an island then this could be the place for you.

island, lake trasimeno, umbria, making fishing nets, fishermen

Stepping off the boat onto this quiet little island is a bit like stepping back in time.  Fishing has been an important part of island life for hundreds of years.  So, this Foto Friday shows two fisherman deep in concentration as they make a fishing net in the traditional way.  It was great to see then making it by hand rather than with a machine.
