My Favourite Part Of Berlin

If you’ve been reading my posts, you will know that I was in Berlin recently for a travel exhibition.  When that finished, I had time to explore Berlin with my parents who flew over to spend a few days with me.  After visiting all the usual tourist sites such as the Brandenburg Gate, and Checkpoint Charlie, it was time to discover some of the less touristy parts of Berlin.  For inspiration, I looked through a booklet by Visit Berlin called ‘Seeing Berlin’  As I flicked through the pages, I came across a walking route called ‘Neighbourhood Tour in Kreuzberg-Neukölln’.  I had heard of these areas so I intrigued to find out more by following the walking route.

We didn’t complete the route but we had a lovely time admiring the view and the buildings and soaking up the atmosphere along the way from Gneisenaustrasser station via Landwehr Canal to Hermannplatz station.  After only a short time there, I had a good feeling about this area and the longer we were there, the more I liked it.  This is why:

There are a number of interesting buildings.  Passionskirche (Passion Church) is one of these.  We didn’t go inside but admired its beauty from the outside instead.

There are some, what seem like, Art Decco buildings, which I assume are apartments because they have 5 or 6 floors.  If I lived in Berlin, I would like to live in one of these because I love the style of these buildings and the location, for me, is perfect because they overlook the canal.

BerlinIf I didn’t live there, I would want to live somewhere close by so I could stroll along the canal.  This was the best part of the walk for me.  It was so relaxing and peaceful.  Suddenly, I didn’t feel like I was in a city.  Unsurprisingly, It’s very popular with the locals.

As you may have seen from one of my previous posts on Street Art in Berlin, it’s a very arty and creative city.  It seemed impossible to escape it.  These two buildings are great examples of that.  There was a sign promoting StreetUniverCity on the second building.  Apparently, StreetUniverCity is a non-governmental educational association which helps young people from deprived areas.  According to the website, it focuses on social, physical, cultural and art education programmes.

It’s great to hear about projects like that.  I was so impressed by the artwork on the buildings but this was my favourite.
berlinAs we were nearing the end of our walk, we came across these rather colourful buildings.  Underneath the apartments are art galleries and a diving shop.  This is so in-keeping with Berlin since it has proved to be a very creative and colourful city.

I am so glad that we decided to do this walking route.  If not, we wouldn’t have had the pleasure of discovering Kreuzberg and Neukölln.  We all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.  When I return to Berlin, I will definitely do some of the other walking routes in the booklet because there are still so many places to discover.  Until then, Kreuzberg and Neukölln are my favourite parts of the city, especially down by the canal.
