It’s a Marble-ous Cathedral!

As mentioned in a previous Foto Friday, I went on a walking tour around Lille and learned loads of interesting nuggets of information I wouldn’t have otherwise discovered.  One of these was about the cathedral in Lille, Notre Dame de la Treille.

What’s interesting about this cathedral is the fact that it took such a long time to complete – 145 years, in fact.  Having said that, La Sagrada Familia in Barcelona is likely to outdo that as it is unlikely to be completed in the next 14 years and neither of these have any chance of outdoing Cologne Cathedral in Germany which, according to Wikipedia, took 640 years to complete (1248-1880).  Can you believe that?  640 years!

Because of the time it took to complete Notre Dame de la Treille, there is an interesting mix of new and old.  It is really clear from the exterior that the building has been constructed in different eras.  The last part, which was completed in 1999, is this Foto Friday.  From the outside, it seems a little drab, dull, and uninspiring.  But, once you get inside and turn around you see this magnificent sight.

Lille, cathedral, france, sightsI love it.  I think it is a work of genius because you just don’t expect to see that when you look at the cathedral from the outside.  Well, I didn’t and I didn’t expect it to be so light inside but the light shone in.  It’s because of the marble sheets which are only 3cm thick.  The light floods in through the thin sheets of marble.  It’s a big, bold statement.  I mean, the panel with the marble goes all the way up to the ceiling and it’s really high!
