Cube Houses in Rotterdam

I like things that are a little unusual and these cube houses I came across in Rotterdam are most definitely that!
Cube Houses

When I look at them, I think of Rubik’s Cubes.  What do you think?  Interestingly, the inventor of the Rubik’s Cube was actually a professor of architecture.  That’s by the by because these houses weren’t developed by Professor Rubik.

The idea for these houses came from a Dutch architect, Piet Blom, who wanted to develop housing that was more organic, like trees, and space-saving because he wanted every area to have multiple uses.  The result was 36 houses, many offices and workshops, and a school that was converted into a hostel in 2009.

If I’d known about the cube hostel beforehand, I would have definitely stayed there but I didn’t know there were cube houses let alone a cube hostel.  Instead, I got the chance to have a look around one of the houses which is actually a museum now.  That was great because I love looking around houses.  It was interesting to see how it was laid out and the shape of it inside.  It is certainly the most unusual house I have ever been inside.  What surprised me was that the houses were built in the 80s but I got more of a 70s vibe from the whole thing.

If you have an interest in architecture or unusual things then this is definitely worth seeing because you can just have a wander round the area and see the cube house community, visit the museum, or stay in the cube hostel, which will give you the best idea of what it would be like to live in one.

This is where they it’s located…
