Flying High over London

I decided to shake things up a bit for this Foto Friday and have a video rather than a photo for this week.  So, I suppose it’s Video Friday!

I was at the World Travel Market last week and, on the last day, I had my first ride over London on the Emirates Air Line, which is the cable car ride across the River Thames.

Some fellow travel bloggers and I left the Excel and, after a short walk, used our Oyster cards to pay for the ride, just as we would do for any other mode of transport in London.  We climbed the stairs and then, one by one, boarded one of the cars as it continued to move.   We didn’t have to queue or wait so it was very quick and easy to use.  It was a great way to get from the Excel to the O2 Arena.  The alternative would have been the Tube but it wouldn’t have been as much fun, especially as it was rush hour and we would have had to squeeze in and be nose to nose with fellow commuters.  Instead, we glided high across the River Thames and had a magnificent nighttime view of London.  Not only that but we also had free WiFi access.  That sealed the deal, along with the fact that it was a bit like a fun fair ride.

The cable cars have had a bit of a battering in the press this year, especially as the number of passengers has halved since the previous year with suggestions that it should become a privately-run tourist attraction instead.  Because it costs £3.20 one way, I’m not sure I would use it as a regular means of transport but it was certainly a novel experience.

Would I do it again?

Definitely!  Next time, I want to fly high across London during the day.  If you haven’t been on London’s only cable cars, I think it would be a shame to miss out.  I would recommend taking two trips – one during the day and then one at night.

Enough talking, here’s a very short video of our Emirates Air Line cable car ride…

As I’m sure you can tell, my travel blogger companions Becki, Paul, Steve, Nienke, Valerie, Susie, Brendon, Carina, Alison and I had a lot of fun.

Have you been on the Emirates Air Line cable car?  If so, what was your experience of it?  If not, are you interested in taking a ride across the Thames in one?

Ah, you were at World Travel Market, Teresa?! Shame we didn’t meet! This cable car looks awesome. We are just planning what we will do in London today and I think we’ll have to add this to the list! Thank you for sharing this cool ride!

    Hi Jessica.

Yes, I was and, yes, it was a shame we didn’t meet – next time, perhaps! Did you go for a ride on the Emirates Air Line yesterday? If so, did you go during the day or at night and what did you think of it? I still have to go for a ride during the day,

    Best wishes, Teresa.
