Prague: Pretty as a Picture at Night

After hearing so much about it, I finally made it to Prague last year.  It certainly lives up to its reputation for being a beautiful city.  What I hadn’t realised was how incredibly beautiful it would be at night, especially down by the Vltava River.  For that reason, it’s this week’s Foto Friday. OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I was actually on a tram on my way back from the St. Vitus Cathedral to my hotel.  I wasn’t actually going to stop.  That was until I looked to my left and saw the incredible view as we crossed the river on one of the many bridges.  I hastily got off the the tram at the next stop without a moment’s thought.

I walked along the riverbank taking umpteen photos as I went and marvelling at the sight in front of me.  It really was incredible.  Many others had the same idea as me and, at one point, I was one of a long line of people with their cameras poised, trying to get the best possible night shot.

I chose this photo because you can see Charles Bridge, which is iconic, Prague Castle, and St. Vitus Cathedral.  I also love the reflection of the ancient structures in the water.  They date from 9th century to 15th century.  Charles Bridge replaced the original bridge, which had been damaged by a flood, as it was an essential link between the Old Town and Prague Castle.  For centuries, it was the only bridge over the Vltava River and was also considered an important trade route between Western and Eastern Europe.

Obviously, the placement of the lights and the number used makes it look so spectacular at night.  I wouldn’t like to hazard a guess at how many lights they use.  All I know is, it’s a lot, like many other big cities.  It’s reassuring to know that they are looking at ways to further increase their renewable energy sources. 🙂

If you go to Prague, take your camera for a walk down by the riverside one night.  It’d be a shame to miss it.

Prague is a European city that is high on my list! It has eluded me in the past, have planned a couple trip there but the plans always get changed or cancelled. So it’s still on the list. Lovely photo, thanks!

    Hi Lina.

Thanks! It is a beautiful city. I’m sure you’ll love it when you finally get there. It’s very popular now, so try not to go in the high season.

    Merry Christmas!

    Teresa.
