Nowy Sacz Royal Castle

As you will have undoubtedly noticed from the title, I have another castle for you this week. Well, I’m in Poland, and you can’t go far without seeing either a church or a castle. So, castle it is!

Nowy Sacz Royal CastleNowy Sacz Royal Castle dates back to the 14th century.  It was built around the same time as Wawel Royal Castle in Krakow which was during Casimir the Great’s reign.

What you see today of the Royal Castle in Nowy Sacz is a shadow of its former self.  The castle has been reconstructed three times, which includes once when it was almost completely destroyed in the 17th century, and then again during the Second World War.

During the Second World War, the castle was used by the Germans to store ammunition, and, apparently, it was the site of mass executions.  It’s hard to imagine that when you see it now.

Once you’re seen the castle, you can go for a walk along the river, or head into the old town.

Location

Nowy Sacz is in the south of Poland.  The bus journey from Krakow to Nowy Sacz takes just under two and a half hours.  There is a train station, but it’s a bit of a walk from the old town.  As you arrive in Nowy Sacz, it’s likely that you will see the castle on your way in.  I did.  If you’re travelling by bus, this is a good place to get off the bus because the old town is close by, as well as one of the few hotels.  You can get a better idea from this map:

I couldn’t find much information on the castle, so please get in touch if you have additional information.  Have you been to Nowy Sacz?
