Hi, my name is Teresa, and at the age of 38 I finally realised a long-held dream of mine to travel around the world.

travel, independent travel, teresa

I say a long-held dream because it was something I had thought about from time to time but never actually did anything about.  Then, at the age of 37, a major event made me re-evaluate my life.  During that time, this notion of travelling re-emerged.  The decision to give up everything and go travelling as an older than average traveller for the first time in my life, when I had no idea what to expect, was a scary one, but that’s exactly what I did.  You can find out more about how I did that here.

To cut a long story short, I started in India and finished in Argentina.  I backpacked my way around 18 countries on 3 continents in 365 days using planes, trains and lots of buses.  I had a number of ‘firsts’ on my journey.  Here are just five of them:

  • Travelling solo
  • Backpacking
  • Staying in hostels
  • Couchsurfing
  • Turning up in places with no accommodation arranged in advance

As you can probably tell, I was on a tight budget and up for a bit of adventure.  I am so glad I finally did it because it was one heck of a year.

I learned a lot about myself, visited some amazing places, and met some incredible people.  That year changed my life completely because, following that experience, I changed my career; set up this blog; continued travelling, but at a slower pace; and became an expat.

This experience changed me and my life.  It made me look at myself and life differently.  It had a profoundly positive effect on me that I would never have imagined.  As I update this, nine years on from when I left for that RTW trip, I am so glad I got out of my comfort zone and headed off on this journey.  I have now been to almost 70 countries, some of which I have been to numerous times.  I find it hard to believe that I have actually been to so many countries, but I have.

Why Independent Travel Help?

Having travelled around the world, I realised that I didn’t want to settle in life and decided to go for something that I would find fulfilling and was passionate about.  I also didn’t want it to be just a ‘stand-alone’ experience because it had such a big impact on me and my life.

Over the years, women have asked me about my experience and some have said they couldn’t do it.  The truth is they could, but only if it’s what they really want to. Independent Travel Help has a mix of information to inspire, motivate, and inform.
