I have been to Rome once before but it was a very long time ago and I have wanted to return ever since. Because of that, I want to ‘Go with Oh’ to Rome but do it a bit differently this time. I have to confess that I’m a bit of a romantic and one of my favourite films is Roman Holiday, which was filmed on location in Rome. So, I would love to revisit this wonderful city to retrace the steps of Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck all those years ago, only this time it would be Teresa and Fabrice. So, where exactly would we go? Here are some of the places we would visit.
We’d take a stroll down via Margutta and stop at number 51, which was Joe Bradley’s apartment in the film. Apparently, there are some artists’ galleries and antique shops so we would probably have a little wander around those before continuing our journey.
At the Spanish Steps, we’d have a gelato while sitting on the steps, watching the world go by. Will Fabrice buy me a flower from the flower seller there? You’ll have to wait and see.
The Princess had her hair cut near the Trevi Fountain. Hmm, I’ll pass on that but I will throw a coin in the fountain again. Well, if the legend comes true, that would be yet another return to Rome. It’s gotta be worth a try!
Apparently, the cafe in the film is no longer there so we would sit at another cafe and enjoy a coffee or even a glass of champagne just as the Princess did in the film but perhaps not for breakfast.
In the film, the Princess and Joe Bradley enjoy an evening of dancing on a river cruise. I would certainly like to go on a Tiber River Dinner Cruise one evening, particularly if it included live music and dancing but I probably won’t jump into the river as they do in the film.
Bocca della Verita
One of the film’s most unforgettable scenes is at the Mouth of Truth. Here, Joe Bradley places his hand in the carved stone face and pretends it has been bitten off. At first, the very naive Princess believes him. Call me naive but, when I was last in Rome, I put my hand in the Mouth of Truth and felt a little nervous. I mean, you never know!
The Roman Forum
The Roman Forum is where the Princess and Joe Bradley meet. Being an old romantic, I love Slow Travel Italy’s suggestion of going back in the evening to enjoy the flood-lit view from Campidoglio.
The Colosseum really ‘wowed’ me the first time around so it will be great to go back and see it again. I promise not to ride a Vespa after drinking a glass of Champagne, as the Princess did. You have my word!
The Palazzo Colonna (in Piazza Santa Apostoli)
Near the Colosseum is where the tearful part, for me anyway, happened. It’s at the end of the film when the Princess finds out Joe’s true identity at a press conference. Apparently, it is a museum now and is only open on Saturday mornings from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. That means, I would have to be there at the weekend. Hmm, Rome at the weekend… I’d make that sacrifice!
Live like locals
Apart from my romantic notion of following in the footsteps of Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck, ‘Go-ing with Oh’ means that we would have the opportunity of living like locals (Romans) while we were there as we would stay in an apartment. That has to be the icing on the cake for me!
I have everything crossed in the hope that I will be ‘Go with Oh’s’ guest blogger in spring 2013 so I can have my own Roman Holiday as part of a European Vacation: four cities in one month. Wow, it sounds so good!
Now, here’s one for you. If you LIKE ‘Go with Oh’s’ Facebook page, you have the chance of winning some fab prizes, really! Go and have a quick peek and… GOOD LUCK!
