“When you know what you want, and want it bad enough, you will find a way to get it.”
As mentioned in the previous post, you need to be motivated and committed to achieve your goal. If not, you might still achieve it but it won’t be a fun process and it’s likely to be a hard slog. Hmmm, not a good sign! So, how will you stay motivated and committed to achieving your goal?
Tips to get and keep you motivated
1. Why do you want to achieve the goal(s) you have written down? Write down your goal and all the reasons for wanting to achieve it.
a. What will achieving the goal do for you (and/or others)? There may be benefits to other people. It’s important to clarify that goal-setting isn’t a selfish activity.What will it be like when you achieve it?
b. Use all your senses to experience what it would be like to achieve the goal. We are multi-sensory beings so this might be a great way to motivate you.
c. What are the consequences of achieving it? If you think the consequences of achieving your goal will have a negative impact on others, you might sabotage your efforts. It’s important to think about who or what achieving your goal will have an impact on.
d. What will it be like if you don’t achieve it? If you aren’t concerned about whether or not you achieve it, pick another goal that you will have a greater impact on you.
e. How believable and achievable is the goal? If you don’t believe it is achievable then it you probably won’t achieve it. It has to be something you want and something you believe you can achieve.
f. What are the consequences of not achieving it (for you and/or others)?
2. On a scale of 0-10 (0 having no commitment to the goal to 10 being fully committed to do whatever it takes to make it happen, how committed are you to achieving your goal? If your answer is less than 9, what do you need to do to increase your commitment to at least a 9? Remember, if it’s something you really want then you need to be willing to do whatever it takes to make it happen (providing it’s moral, ethical and legal, of course).
3. Whose goal is it? Sometimes we set goals that other people want for us or what we think we want rather than what we actually want. It must be your goal and something you really want otherwise you won’t have the motivation to keep going.
4. Who or what can help you to achieve your goal? We have internal and external resources that will help keep us motivated and on track to achieve our goals. What are your strengths that will help you to achieve your goal? Who can help you to achieve your goal and keep you motivated? Being accountable to someone can help. I told work colleagues, friends and family that I was thinking of travelling around the world. Once I did that, it spurred me on because it was ‘out there’ and from time to time they asked me about my progress. Tell someone you trust and who is interested and positive about your goal. You could even tap into the ever-expanding social media resource as a way of being accountable to others as well as connecting with others who are or have been in the same or similar situation to you. What physical resources can help to keep you motivated? It might be as simple as an online calendar that reminds you of things you need to do.
5. Remind yourself of your goal and your reason for wanting it. When I was working towards my travel goal, I bought an A3 size map and stuck it on my kitchen wall beside the door. That was a constant reminder of what I was aiming for. I also added sticky notes to it when I thought about another place I wanted to go to. This used some of my senses – it was visual so I could see where I might travel to and adding the sticky notes made it kinaesthetic. This kept it ‘real’ for me, helped with my motivation and, on a practical note, it helped me to plan out my route. What could you do to keep your goal and the reason for wanting it fresh in your mind everyday? Don’t forget about all the resources you have available to you, which again include the vast array of social media resources.
Once you’ve worked through all of this, you will know what you want, why you want it, you will be focused and committed to achieving it. So what next? You need to take action. Setting goals and having the motivation to keep going are great, providing you take action. This is discussed in the next post.
