What Turned My Dream Of Travelling The World Into A Reality?

If you can dream it, you can do it.

(Walt Disney)

I had always wanted to travel the world but, as the years went by, that dream faded and seemed less and less likely to become a reality.  So, what got me to finally travel the world?  Well, I was evaluating my life: what I had achieved and what I wanted to do.  Up to that point, I had never really planned things in my life.  I went with the flow and dealt with things as they arose.  I wasn’t a planner but a doer.  Anyway, with the big ’40′ looming, I realised I would have to start doing things differently if I was going to achieve some of the things that had been floating around in my head for years.

I wasn’t sure where to begin, to be honest.  Then one day, I saw an infomercial by an American guy I had never heard of.  Since then, I found out that he is actually very well-known and highly regarded in personal development.  Anyway, I needed something to get me started so I decided to give it a try.  I wasn’t sure what to expect and had no idea if it was actually going to help me… but it did.  Listening to the CDs and completing the exercises helped me a lot with the following:

  1. I began to think about what I actually wanted and started to focus on it.

  2. I had a compelling reason, which motivated me and kept me motivated.

  3. I started to think about and plan out what I needed to do to actually make it happen.

  4. I took small consistent steps that helped me work towards my goal.

  5. I tackled the ‘gremlins’ that were threatening to stop me.

The CD set was a really useful guide and I started to think differently about things.  I honestly don’t believe I would have travelled the world if I hadn’t gone through this process because I needed some guidance, which this provided.  To give this some context, I spent about 20 years dreaming of going travelling but, when I actually followed the process and focused on what I wanted, it took about 10 months from getting the CD set to arriving in Delhi at the start of my trip – just me and my backpack!

I realise now that anything is possible, providing you know what you want, you focus on it, have a good reason, make a plan, take small steps towards achieving that goal, and work on the things that are stopping, limiting or holding you back.

I have learned and experienced a lot since then and I would like to share that with you.  So, over the next few weeks in these ‘how to’ posts, I am going to take you through a modified version of the process I followed to set you on the path to achieving the things that you have just been thinking about.  Are you ready?
